At PACE (Progressive Action for Community Empowerment), we believe that meaningful change in communities often begins in the spaces where young people naturally gather. Sometimes that place is a classroom, sometimes a community hall — and sometimes, it is a football field.
Recently, we held our first induction session with Cravers FC, a football team made up of passionate young players who meet regularly to train, compete, and build camaraderie through sport. What started as a simple engagement quickly became something much more powerful.
Football has always been a unifying force. It brings together individuals from different backgrounds who share a common passion. But during our session with Cravers FC, we wanted to go deeper than the game itself.
The goal of the induction was simple: to help team members know each other beyond the pitch.
Instead of focusing on tactics or training drills, the session focused on leadership, connectedness, and personal identity. Players were encouraged to share who they are outside of football — their professions, interests, and aspirations.
What emerged from this conversation was remarkable.
Within the team were individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, including:
Psychologists
Accountants
Students
Entrepreneurs
Skilled professionals in different fields
Many of the players were meeting each other in this deeper capacity for the first time, even though they had played together for years.
This moment highlighted a powerful truth: football teams are not just sports groups — they are networks of talent, knowledge, and opportunity.
One of the most exciting outcomes of the session was the realization that the team itself could become a support network for personal and professional growth.
By simply creating space for introductions and conversations, players began seeing new possibilities:
Networking with teammates in different professions
Learning from each other’s experiences
Supporting one another beyond the football field
At PACE, this is exactly the type of community empowerment we aim to facilitate — creating environments where individuals recognize the value they bring and how they can collaborate.
Following the induction, the next step is to onboard every team member into the PACE ecosystem through a structured questionnaire.
The onboarding process will help us understand:
Each player’s skills and professional background
Their personal aspirations
The challenges they face
The resources they can contribute
This information will allow PACE to better connect individuals with opportunities, mentorship, and community initiatives.
One of the unique aspects of this collaboration is how it links sport with community development projects.
PACE is currently implementing an urban farming initiative, including the development of vertical gardens that promote food security in urban areas.
By engaging youth teams like Cravers FC, we aim to demonstrate how community groups can contribute to practical solutions for local challenges such as:
Food insecurity
Youth unemployment
Community collaboration
The football team therefore becomes more than a sports group — it becomes a community action platform.
The engagement with Cravers FC is just the beginning.
As relationships grow and more teams become involved, the vision is to eventually organize a community football tournament that brings together youth teams from different areas.
However, the tournament will represent more than competition. It will showcase the power of sport as a tool for empowerment, collaboration, and community impact.
Through these engagements, PACE hopes to create a growing network of young people who are not only active on the pitch but also involved in building stronger and more resilient communities.
Our first session with Cravers FC reminded us of an important lesson: the potential for transformation often already exists within communities. Sometimes, all it takes is the right platform to unlock it.
Football fields across our cities are filled with energy, talent, and ambition. When these spaces are combined with mentorship, collaboration, and community-driven projects, they can become powerful catalysts for change.
At PACE, we are excited to continue this journey — one team, one conversation, and one community at a time.
